I had my first listen of the forthcoming (or maybe it was released yesterday) collaboration between Xiu Xiu and Italian art/noise outfit Larsen. I'm still reeling. I shouldn't say too much because I'm reviewing the CD for an upcoming issue of The Stranger. Here's a taste, though.

I don't know about you guys, but this 7" (like many 7-inchers) is a dream come true! Two of my favorite musician-entities covering each other. Devendra Banhart, the freak-folk prophet; Xiu Xiu the straight-up freak duo. Devendra takes a Xiu Xiu track from their next-to-newest album, Fabulous Muscles and sets the original words spoken by Jamie Stewart to music, morphing the confrontational, West Coast/Valley-Girl-tinged interlude into a vaguely blues-y Vietnam-era war protest song hiding under some deceptively tuneful music.

Did you know you were going to shoot
off the top of a four year old girl's head
And look across her car-seat down into her skull
And see into her throat, and did you know
that her dad would say to you,
"Please sir, can I take her body home?"
Oh wait, you totally did know . . . that that would happen
Cuz you're a jock who was too stupid and too greedy

You shot your grenade launcher into people's windows and

but you really wanted to shoot it at someone

Xiu Xiu step in to convert Banhart's track from its easy, tipsy tone into a more impulsive (almost danceable) anthem with characteristic clangs and noise clusters.

The body breaks,

WHAT IS LIBRARY MUSIC?
Production (also called "sound library") music generally is canned background for visual-media applications. Whether used with an advertising company's presentation or a home-movie screening, production music has the generic qualities presumed suitable for industrial applications. A single theme may be restated in various ways and lengths; timings often are under a minute. Vocals are very rare, and the composers and performers are unrecognizable from anything other than production music.

Production music from the 1960s and early 1970s includes spacey keyboards, funk, bongo bop, and many other desirable instrumental idioms. Library cuts are extremely useful for effects and transitions between styles (as segues between regular records). The anonymity of the composers, tight pop arrangements, and latterday discoveries of these "lost," funky tracks make them very attractive. But when played consecutively—to excess—their ersatz origins reveal themselves. And post-1975 or so, as with most regular music, production music generally becomes unbearable.

Closely associated are vanity-published records, particularly records made by companies offering to arrange, perform, record, and press on vinyl any song one wished to send in. These were unavailable both commercially and to anyone seeking a one-time license to use them. But vanity-published records are another type of published music made just by studio musicians (though amateurs composed the lyrics).

Buying: Production albums are highly desirable because they were never commercially released. But, not every library LP has interesting or desirable music (or sounds). If the description, if any, mentions Moog, space, or something else attractive, chances are it could be good.

    "Experts who have studied the US navy's cetacean training exercises claim the 36 mammals could be carrying 'toxic dart' guns. Divers and surfers risk attack, they claim, from a species considered to be among the planet's smartest. The US navy admits it has been training dolphins for military purposes, but has refused to confirm that any are missing."

    Matthew Herbert: "My new record is going to be a disco record. So people might be out having a good time on a Saturday night but they might be dancing to a disco record and the beats are made from cancer."
  • Aprile Millo cancels Carnegie Hall concert over crossover pressure.

I disagree somewhat with the terming of the group of Finnish artists to which Islaja is attached as "freak folk." While the American brand of that genre is quite distinct and has discernible stylistic ties to 60's folk, the Finnish sort is a bit in its own world. It contains elements that conjure much more ancient images—thatched roofs, hand-hewn tools, and deep kettles. It is perhaps a darker take on the psychedelic movement that is slowly but definitely sweeping the artistic world.

"Laivat Saapuu" ["Boats Arriving"] projects scattering indigenous ghosts onto persistent clangs and meditative wind instruments. If the text seems somewhat like a religious chant, it may be because it draws from the Finnish version of the Lord's Prayer: Aamen, aamen ja vielä aamen/ laivat saapuu/ isä meidän, the last phrase meaning "Our Father."

Antony & the Johnsons - Covers



This artist needs no introduction, as he's just won the coveted Mercury Prize and gotten a wonderful write-up in the New York Times Magazine. People are buying and downloading his recordings like crazy. His album I Am a Bird Now has jumped sixty-two places since yesterday and (as of this moment) stands now at #166 on Amazon.com's Top Sellers chart. If you've seen him and his band live, you know that he likes to cover other artists' tunes. Now that I've seen him twice, I've grown to love one in particular. This, Leonard Cohen's "The Guests."

This past weekend, I attended his Seattle show at the Triple Door and was pleasantly surprised (after having completely lost it when he sang his treatment of the Edgar Allan Poe poem "The Lake") when he pulled out this cover of the Nico song "Afraid."

Scribbling my way back

I'm in the middle of the most tedious meeting right now. On my yellow legal pad there are sketches of Mayan heads, plumes, Tenctonese script, Hangul, various handwriting samples of the Biblical quote "Eloi, eloi, lama sabachthani." And:
